[edit] Primary Industry
Kattappana is known as the "commercial capital of highrange " of Kerala, as the area is one of the primary producers of pepper. The mid-1980s saw an unprecedented boom in construction activity as a result of a surge in the price of pepper. The economic boom of the town led to land prices that were once rumoured to be higher than those in Kochi, the commercial capital of Kerala, and that still remain high.

Kattappana is an example of how government records may have little to do with the actual state of affairs.[citation needed] Much of this bustling town is part of "forest areas" said to be owned by the government, but this ownership is not in the official records of the town. The state of the cultivated lands in the surrounding area is no different. Granting pure title deeds to the farmers, a vote-catching slogan raised by successive state governments, has until now been thwarted by Central Forest laws and court decisions.[citation needed]

Despite being the commercial hub of the Highrange, Kattappana is often not shown on official maps[citation needed]. Many attractions near Kattappana are little-known by outsiders.

Kattappna is also the centre of production and marketing of Cardomom, Ginger,Cocoa and Coffe,

[edit] Demographics
Syrian Catholics are an important part of the community, though the landmark of the town is a magnificent edifice dedicated to Sree Narayana Gurudev. The town has a large population of Syrian Catholic Achayans, who mainly derive from places like Palai, and Kanjirappally. The Nair and Ezhava communities also make up a good part of the population. There are very few Muslims compared to other communities. Jehovah's Witnesses are very active in this area.

[edit] Transportation
The nearest airport is at Nedumbassery (130 km away) near Cochin. The town has no rail connectivity. The nearest railway station is at Kottayam (104 km away). People rely mainly on bus routes which run through the town. There are three State Highways that passes through the town.

[edit] Tourism
Kattappana itself is a commercial town, not a centre for tourism, but there are many tourist spots in the surrounding countryside. There are two hills near the town from which it is possible to get a birds eye view of the town and experience the cool climate at 1,100 metres (3,600 ft) above sea level.

[edit] Idukki Reservoir
Anchuruli has a scenic view over the Idukki reservoir, which is a part of the largest hydro-electric project in the state of Kerala. There is a tunnel that connects the Erattayar (a small town near Kattappana) dam with Anchuruli, which lets the water from the dam to flow to the Idukki Reservoir. Calvery Mount has a birds eyes view from 200 metres above the reservoir.

[edit] Hospitals
Kattappana is home to one of the leading hospitals in the Idukki district - St. John's Hospital, which is owned and managed by the St. John of God Hospitaller Services. It is located 1.5 km off the heart of the town and has a full range of modern facilities. An institution named St. John College of Nursing is attached to the hospital for nursing and paramedical education.

Theni Medical College in Tamil Nadu is around 70 km from Kattappana and is a closer destination than any other medical college in Kerala. Kottayam Medical College is the nearest medical college in Kerala for Kattappana residents.

Other hospitals functioning in Kattappana are Anchana Hospital and Bala Hospital (both near Pulianmala Road), Christy Hospital (Idukki kavala), Saro Hospital (Erattayar Road, near IHRD College), the Government Ayurvedic Hospital, Kattappana and the Government Homeo Hospital, Kattappana. Land has recently been acquired for a new multi speciality hospital near State Bank junction.

[edit] Entertainment
For entertainment, people mostly depend on movie houses in the town. Sagara Movie House and Aiswarya (formerly known as Sangeetha) feature DTS sound systems and often show new releases from the Malayalam film industry. "Sagara" is situated by Kochuthovala road, while "Aiswarya" is near the Town Hall. "Santhosh", near a private bus stand and KSHB Shopping Complex, is the third cinema hall in the town.

[edit] Sports
Kattappana, along with some nearby rural areas, has provided a handful of Olympic athletes to the country. In the older version of the state school athletic meetings, Kattappana educational district used to come runners-up for many years consecutively, after [Kanjirappalli]. This has, however, happened less frequently in recent years.

There were a few football clubs in the town, such as Spices City Club, and an annual football event used to be conducted in which various clubs from all over Kerala participated .

  • Kattappana is a quaint hilly town in Idukki District and is on the Ernakulam-Thekkady road. It lies in the high ranges of the Western Ghats, at an altitude of 810 m above the sea level. Kattappana is just 32 km from Kumily and is around 290 km to the north of the state capital, Thiruvananthapuram. Kattappana derives its name after the Malayalam word ‘Koottappana’ meaning ‘a group of palms’- a band of daring farmers who migrated over to the forests for cultivation in the early 1950s discovered this fertile tract rich in palms and aptly named it as ‘Koottappana’. Kattappana is mainly an agricultural town renowned for its spices; hence the town is some times referred to as the ‘spice city’ of Kerala. The emergence of Kattappana from an underdeveloped village to the second largest town in Idukki District owes a lot to its spice trade – still its economy fluctuates with the variations occurring in the spice market. Kattappana, in itself, is a tourist spot in Idukki District. It assumes prominence as being located between two world famous tourist centers, Idukki Reservoir and Thekkady, which is instrumental in drawing scores of tourists into this serene locale. The famous pilgrimage center, Kalvari Mount is nearby. Eravikulam National Park, Thattekad Bird Sanctuary, Thommankuthu waterfalls and Munnar Hill Station are other major tourist spots around. Nearest airport is at Kochi. Ernakulam is 154 km to the north-west. Kottayam Railway Station is the closest rail-head. A private and public bus station at Kattappana operates services through out the state and to some towns in the neighboring Tamil Nadu
