Sibiu County Department of National Archives

Romania / Sibiu / Arhivelor Street, 3
public institution, Art Nouveau / Jugendstil (architecture), archives institution, Eclectic (architecture), listed building / architectural heritage, 1914_construction, 1920s construction

The city archive is documented in 1463. It stores documentary funds referring to historical events from the period 1009 - 1984.
Building erected between 1914-1923 (delayed due to the First World War), inaugurated in 1923 when the National Archive moved from the City Hall. The building is the first construction from present day Romania built especially for the preservation and conservation of the archival heritage, where it is still today.
The construction is in Art Nouveau style, with eclectic elements, the work of the architect W. Josef Bedeus, apparently inspired by the archives in Schwerin.
The characteristic of the construction is the separation of the administration and the warehouses in two different buildings connected by a corridor, the measure taken in case of a fire.
The administrative building, located towards Arhivelor Street, is distinguished by the colossal pilasters and the portal with columns.
In the old building on this site there was a People's Library opened in 1900 and until the First World War there were two important institutions: the Municipal Court (Gemeindegericht städtisches) and the Employment Service (Arbeitsvermittlungsstelle des Bürger und Gewerbeverein).
During 1945-1952 here was the headquarters of the Sibiu Regional Militia.

The administrative wing was renovated amateurishly and in a hurry in 2019 by the National Archives of Romania, a centralized institution based in Bucharest, being forced by the City Hall of Sibiu.
