This was the former site of the Terrytown Sod and Vegetable Farm, acquired by the state in 1994. From then until 2000, it was managed by the Florida Game and Fresh Water Fish Commission as a public waterfowl hunting area.

Created under the "Save Our Rivers Project", these Stormwater Treatment Areas (STAs) are constructed to remove nutrients through plant growth and the accumulation of decomposing plant material in a layer of peat. The South Florida Water Management District has constructed about 41,000 acres of STAs. The Everglades Nutrient Removal Project was designed as a prototype STA and is a crucial component of the Everglades Restoration Program. At 17,000 acres, it is the largest man-made area of wetlands in the world.
