Once double its current size, the Great Dismal Swamp is the largest of the southern swamps, which include the ones in Florida and Georgia. Once home to rare centuries old bald cypress trees, this swamp was drained for farmland and thoroughly logged until the 1970's. What remains is a now protected area with reforestation efforts underway. This swamp is unique in that witnesses report having seen dwarf palmetto palm trees growing wild in the area, which is almost unheard of in this region.
