Largest natural lake in North Carolina. The lake forms about 4/5 of the slightly larger Mattamuskeet National Wildlife Refuge. A 156-acre portion of the refuge along the shore of the lake known as Salyer's Ridge Natural Area is designated a National Natural Landmark for its rare mature loblolly pine forest that is in the process of transitioning to deciduous forest.
