Ajax Bay Refrigeration Plant

Falkland Islands / Goose Green /
place with historical importance, interesting place

Erected by the Colonial Development Corporation in the 1950's as a frozen storage facility for Falklands Mutton, the Ajax Bay Refrigeration Plant and its surrounding workers settlement operated for less than a decade before it was found to be economically unviable.

Stripped and abandoned as its workers and its infrastructure were moved to Stanley, facility sat idle and remained largely unremarkable until Friday May 21st, 1982. Occupied on that day by 45 Commando Royal Marines during Operation Sutton, the facility was turned over to surgical-support teams and brigade maintenance units. Serving as a rear-area field hospital for British Forces as they fought to retake the Falklands, the plant also became home to the Ajax Bay Satcom Terminal which provided a direct link to Royal Fleet Command at Northwood, UK.

Following the cessation of hostilities, the Ajax Bay plant returned to its abandoned state and remains in ruins today.
