The former "New York" Grand Hotel was built at No.15, Russe Street, in 1925 by architect Georgi Kostov. All other downtown hotels were also located along Russe Street. People walking in the street often stopped to admire the amazing building erected around a small square opposite the city garden. Its owner was Dr. Shishkov, a well-known Varna surgeon and gynecologist. Initially the building housed Dr. Shishkov`s private clinic (a sanatorium) for both residents and out-patients. In 1936 the building was reconstructed and turned into New York Hotel, which was known to be immaculately clean and well-appointed, and to provide excellent service. The building was decorated with exquisite statues created by Cyril Shivarov, a well-known sculptor from Varna.
