The Saint Joseph Cathedral was built in Roman style combined with gothic elements between 1875-1883, by the Bishop Ignatius Paoli (1870-1885) from the Pasionist Monk Union, who was named Archbishop. He was raised at the rank of Archbishopric, after having finished the building and the Bishopric in Bucharest.
The building plans were made by the famous vienneese architect Dr. Freiedrich Schmidt, the one who designed also the City Hall of Vienna. It is a metropolitan and archiepiscopal cathedral 40 m long, 20 m wide and 22 m high. The funds for building this cathedral were gathered from Christians in Bucharest, from important reach people and also from good willing foreigners, friends or relatives of Bishop Pauli.
