The school openned in 1924 as two seperate schools Boys High School and Tech High. Atlanta's schools were segregated and only white males attended. However, in 1947 the schools became co-educational. The two schools were combined and renamed Henry Grady High School.

Henry Grady was the editor for the Atlanta Consititution immediately after the Civil War. Grady was a well known writer and orator. In 1886 he proclaimed the advent of the New South where the past was put to rest. Grady envisioned a south where whites and blacks lived in peace and harmony. However, Grady High School did not integrate racially until 1961. At that time Grady was the first Georgia school to open its doors to black students. Grady High School counts among alumni some of Atlanta' most influential citizens.

The school was renamed Midtown High School on June 1st, 2021.
