Sanford Health was originally known as Sioux Valley Hospitals and Health System until in 2007, T. Denny Sanford made a pledge and the hospital was renamed Sanford Health. MeritCare was originally known as St. Luke's Hospital and Fargo Clinic until 1985, when the hospital was renamed MeritCare. In 2009, Sanford Health and MeritCare merged to form Sanford Health and MeritCare. In 2010, the name was officially shortened to Sanford Health.
