The Breckenridges were some of the original black Sooners. They travelled many miles to lay claim to land. White men threatened to kill them for not giving up their land, but the family stood their ground and were able to keep the land. According to the historical documents, the Breckenridges were African Americans, Arapahoe, and Cherokee. The family was unable to register in time as Native American. There were only a few registration sites in Oklahoma and transportation was limited, so many Native Americans were unable to register with the government. This kept them from critical federal aid. Despite the hardships, the Breckenridges have prevailed and still proudly occupy much of the land in this block.
