This area of Minneapolis is only the portion of the city that is east of the Mississippi River. This area is known as the birthplace of Minneapolis. The town of St. Anthony was originally founded on the east side of the river, directly across from what is now downtown Minneapolis.

The area classified as Northeast Minneapolis actually includes a section of the city defined as "Southeast." These neighborhoods in the southern and western section (south of Hennepin Avenue) of the area include several residential areas and the University of Minnesota East Bank Campus. Both Northeast and Southeast Minneapolis are part of the City's Second Precinct.
