Nachod Castle (Наход)

Czech Republic / Kralovehradecky / Nachod / Наход

The imposing castle buildings of the Nachod castle were situated high above the city on the conic promontory. Former medieval Gothic castle from 1254, which guarded tradeway to Baltic sea and ruled the area was reconstructed in Renaissance a later in Baroque style. In 1544 - 1621 the manor belonged to the powerful family of Lords Smiricky of Smirice, leaders of the Czech Estates Uprising. Past the White Mountain Battle 1620 the manor acquired Duke Albrecht of Wallenstin and after his murder in Cheb (Eger) the Emperor Ferdinand II. donated the Nachod castle to the Italian general Piccolomini who established his residence there. The castle fulfilled both the functions as a fortress and a representative residence. The work on both, the fortification and the castle buildings, was directed by Italian architect Carlo Luragho.
