At 140 miles, Jewel Cave is the second longest cave in the world. It is filled with calcite crystals and other wonders that make up the "jewels" of Jewel Cave National Monument. Teddy Roosevelt proclaimed Jewel Cave a National Monument on February 7, 1908. The area was further developed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s with The National Park Service offering tours starting in 1939.

  • A bit primitive when I was there in 1958 as there were no paved paths.
