Sandy Hook Lighthouse

USA / New Jersey / Atlantic Highlands /
lighthouse, NRHP - National Register of Historic Places, historic landmark

The Sandy Hook Lighthouse is the oldest U.S. lighthouse still in operation and in unaltered condition, and the only light tower surviving from the colonial period. Designed and built in 1764 by Isaac Conro, the light's octagonal base supports a conical tower made of rubblestone with brick reinforcement within which stands 103ft tall and displays a 1000-watt fixed white light magnified through a third-order Fresnel Lens.

Declared a National Historic Landmark on its 200th anniversary on June 11th, 1964 Sandy Hook Light and it's keepers quarters are now open for tours during the summer months free of charge and is still a functioning aid-to-navigation for New York Harbor.
