island, interesting place, ghost town, state park
This small key was the original county seat of Dade County, and was a busy port in the early-19th century, when the wrecking business in the Keys was in full swing. The settlement was destroyed by Indians in 1840. Today it has reverted to nature, though the state has put up some markers indicating the layout of the town. The only access is by boat, and at the moment there is no dock, so only a kayak or canoe can reach the key. It is visible from the Overseas Highway (US 1) between Upper and Lower Matecumbe Keys.
