, by Sri Asuri Ramanujacharya the great Sri Vaishnava Saint ,during his stay at Tonnur ( then called Tondanur , or " town of the followers " ( of Sri Asuri Ramanuja ))He built it for the benefit of the people who still use the waters for irrigation .He called it Tirumala Sagara ( ocean of the sacred hills ) since it was surrounded by hillocks .
