lake, reservoir lake, interesting place
Thonnur lake is about 30km from Mysore city and about 135km from Bengaluru city. Spread over 2200 acres, this man-made water barrage was built across Yadavanadi/river between two rocky hills during the time of Saint Ramanuja around 1000 years ago. Said to be the oldest dam in India, it was known as 'Thirumalasagara' at that time and now has many names like 'Kere Thondanur' after the second capital of Hoysala Empire and 'Moti Talab' meaning Lake of Pearls. This lake has never dried up in history. There are ancient temples nearby namely, Sri Nambinarayana, Sri Parthasarathy and Sri Narasimha.
