Started in 1927 to provide tile for Wrigley building projects, the pottery eventually branched out into ornamental pottery and tableware. Wrigley insisted on the use of native clays for the creation of the various clay products, despite it being too fragile to withstand the rigors of daily use. After Wrigley died and a new clay deposit was found in Lincoln, CA (the Gladding-McBean company, still in business today) in 1932, the clay products were strengthened with the new clay. Gladding-McBean eventually bought the pottery in 1937 and continued to produce Catalina pottery products for another ten years.
