Founded in 1738 as Gracia Real de Santa Teresa de Mose by the Spanish colonial govenor of Florida, Fort Mose was the first community chartered as a haven for ex-slaves. The site was abandoned in 1763 after Florida was ceded to the English and became a national historic landmark in 1994.
