Constructed 1900 in the Classic Revival style, as the base commander quarters for the U.S. Naval Training Station located on Yerba Buena Island. During World War II it was the residence of Admiral Chester Nimitz, Commander in Chief of the Pacific Fleet; Nimitz retired in 1947 and lived in the house until his death, aged 80, in 1966. Nimitz House was available as an event venue for a while, then in 2013 the east span of the Bay Bridge was built almost directly over its roof. As of 2025 it is unoccupied and in some disrepair.
