The paved tracks, security cabin, benches and bandstand constructed by Pune Municipal Corporation in 2006-07 have only increased human interference around the lake. "These structures were not needed in the first place. They could have been avoided to preserve the 'natural' state of the lake which is now overrun by people. Earlier, the whole lake was surrounded by lush greenery. It was a lot quieter, ideal for breeding and nesting. So the birds came," Jagtap said.
Problems set in when the lake dried up when the rains failed in 2011-12. The civic body carried out desilting in 2013, but the action was quickly opposed by many who felt it would damage the fragile ecosystem of the lake. The work was abandoned halfway when the monsoon arrived, leaving only half the lake desilted. As a result, the lake has ample water in the area where desilting was carried out, while water head is low in the other half. Experts and residents are divided whether complete desilting would be the solution to lake's woes. "The civic body should desilt the lake in order to clean it. Lakaki is a man-made pond. Three underground springs were cleaned during desilting, that resulted in replenishing the fresh water into the pond. There is 6-7 feet silt mound in the pond that needs to be cleared," he added.
The incomplete desilting has boosted vegetation growth in and around the lake, resulting in mosquito breeding
