The Itchen Bridge was opened to traffic on the 1st June 1977, it was officially named "The Itchen Bridge" by HRH Princess Alexandra on the 1st July.

Comments

  • Formerly the major thoroughfare was apparently serviced by a 'floating car bridge'. There are now numerous acts of suicide from this bridge annually - convieniently saving distraught local residents the expense of a 'single' to Dover and a long hike up to the cliffs.
  • As a truck driver, I often use the Car park under the bridge on the Woolston side for overnight stays. Free for 24 hours then 60£.
