Teluk Kumbar

Malaysia / Pulau Pinang / Sungai Ara /

Teluk Kumbar is a suburb within the city of George Town. It is situated at the southern coast of Penang Island between Gertak Sanggul to the west and Bayan Lepas to the east, approximately 17.7km southwest of the city centre. This relatively quiet suburb was named after the salak trees (Salacca zalacca) that grew within the area.

Teluk Kumbar was one of the handful of Malay fishing villages that were built throughout the island in the late 18th century. Agriculture, chiefly fisheries and rice farming, are the mainstays of the suburb. Since the 1990s, urban development has gradually crept into Teluk Kumbar as well and more residential properties are being built within the suburb.

The shoreline of Teluk Kumbar is slated for massive changes in the upcoming decades, due to the impending commencement of the Penang South Reclamation (PSR) project that will provide additional landbank for the city of George Town.

  • Teluk Kumbar is a small fishing village on the southern part of Penang Island. There used to be a Yellow Bus terminus at Teluk Kumbar, but it has since become disused. Teluk Kumbar's call to fame among Penangites is seafood. At Teluk Kumbar are several seaside restaurants specializing in seafood, the most popular of which is a Chinese establishment called Good Friend Seafood, located behind the disused Yellow Bus Workshop near Pekan Teluk Kumbar, with a good view of the sun setting off Gertak Sanggul. • before Good Friend Seafood started the business, the big house was a home to 3 families of Chinese fishermen, one of them called Ah Chai. my father's fishing boat berthed at the same site. hence, got a Chinese friend whom I called Mamat...never knew his Chinese name. very funny guy. Always frequent the bicycle shop own by Eric Tan's father, Tan Ah Peng. There's only two bicycle shops in Teluk Kumbar, Tan Ah Peng and another one own by Md Isa and his son Rahim. Next to Md Isa Bicycle shop was a Licensed Billiard Saloon, closed in 1990's....it was there immediately after WWII, according to my late father who was born in 1918. the nasi kandar shops were kedai Taat and Kedai Daud (Bee Gah Coffee Shop). there were no secondary schools in Teluk Kumbar so students went to St. George, Sacred Heart and Seri Balik Pulau in Kongsi (Balik Pulau) or Raja Tun Uda and Sg Ara in Bayan Lepas. the old shop lots will be torn down, a new hotel being built, Teluk Kumbar will never be the same again. the songkok maker mentioned by Eric Tan is Encik Ahmad bin Sutan, we call him Pak Mat Topi. He was a Baju Melayu tailor too. The Chinese sinseh drug store was the only licenced rubber trader in Telu Kumbar..his shop also served as bus stand...across the road..you will find a mee mamak...by an Indian Muslim...Mamak Bodeh and later took over by Mamat ( Indian). Malays call it Teluk Kumbaq....Chinese call it Kompa...Malays called it Gertak Sanggoi...Chinese called it Boey Orr...to those who was born in Teluk Kumbaq....may God bless you and your family..
  • Well said, everything told is true, but TK now have changed a lot. Development had swallowed all that. Im from Batu Pek Laq.
