Kuala Bahang is the old name of historical Kuala Kedah. Kuala Kedah was ravaged by the Siamese army during the Kedah-Siam war in 1821. The British promised to come to its aid should Kedah be attacked by the Siamese. The assistance never came. The Kedah army defence was led by Sultan Ahmad Tajudin Mukaram Shah who was forced to flee to Penang Island which was then under British rule. It was there where he died only to be exhumed by instruction of his great grandson Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra (first Malaysian Prime Minister) when Malaysia had gained independence. He now rests at the Royal Mausoleum in Langgar, Kedah. Sultan Ahmad Tajuddin died a sad ruler, who lost all - wife, family, wealth and Country. It was during this time before death that he wrote his magnum opus; a poetry which was to be a literary world heritage. The poetry is called 'Syaer Duka Nestapa' - the poetry of great Sadness. Kuala Kedah became capital city of Kedah for 20 years under Siamese direct rule. The centre of administration was the Fort of Kuala Bahang on the rivermouth of Kuala Kedah. It has now been turned into an open air museum administered by the Royal Kedah Historical Soceity. Kuala Kedah is the gateway to the legendary islands of Langkawi. Under the Northern Economic Corridor initiative, Kuala Kedah is to be developed into a tourism hub. Its very popular among tourists and locals for its fresh and excellent sea food.
