 town, suburb

Tanjung Tokong is a suburb within the city of George Town. It is situated approximately 4km northwest of the city centre, encompassing the coastal cape between Tanjung Bungah to the west and Pulau Tikus to the southeast. Being an affluent suburb, Tanjung Tokong is one of the most favoured areas for expatriates within George Town, due to its proximity to the city centre and the seafront location.

The area had been inhabited since the mid-18th century by Chinese fishermen, who then founded the fishing village of Tanjung Tokong. When George Town was granted city status in 1957, the United Hokkien Cemetery within Tanjung Tokong marked the northernmost limit of George Town.

Rapid development of the area began in the 1970s, turning it into an upscale suburb of George Town. The suburb is now home to Straits Quay, a seafront shopping mall-cum-marina that also houses a major convention centre. The ongoing Seri Tanjung Pinang land reclamation project is expected to provide additional landbank for further development.

Another attraction within the suburb is the Secret Avatar Garden, which is inspired by the movie 'Avatar'.
