Roper Hospital was established in 1852, using a bequest from philanthropist and former mayor of Charleston, Colonel Thomas Roper, "to treat all sick and injured people without regard to complexion, religion, or nation." The 1886 earthquake destroyed the old Roper Hospital building (at Queen & Logan). Construction of a new hospital (at the corner of Calhoun & Barre) was completed in 1906.
