Nelson, back in 1775, wasn't Nelson but was called El Dorado by the Spaniards who made the original discoveries of gold in this area that is now El Dorado Canyon. A hundred years later the prospectors and miners of the day took over and established the notorious Techatticup Mine. Disagreements over ownership, management and labor disputes resulted in wanton killings so frequent as to be routine and ordinary. Despite the sinister reputation of the mine, it along with others in the town produced several million dollars in gold, silver, copper and lead.

  • The former Texaco station was used in the film 3000 Miles to Graceland.
  • I have been to and/or through Nelson a few times, most recently on 05-28-2011. Nelson is a very, very small town located a couple of miles west of the Techatticup Mine area (the plane wreck from 3000 Miles to Graceland is just east of the "former Texaco station" on the south side of the road). From my observations, Nelson is comprised mostly of pre-fabricated or mobile type homes, a few old ghost town type structures, and a couple of really nice dwellings on the south side sitting on the lower part of the hills. I do not believe Nelson offers any services (food, gas, etc.)
