CDP - Census Designated Place  Add category

Located in the middle of Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. In the late 1950s there was a rumor going around that the tiny desert community of Borrego Springs was going to become an incorporated city and be "the next Palms Springs." Motels and hotels started springing up and land speculators were buying huge tracts of raw land hoping to make a killing in the soon-to-be booming real estate market. Hundreds of acres were planted with cotton in the expectation that the fields would would eventually become vast suburban housing tracts.

The population was 3,429 at the 2010 census.

Local artist Ricardo Breceda was commissioned by multimillionaire Dennis Avery to populate the desert surrounding Borrego Springs with life-size metal replicas of dinosaurs and Ice Age mammals.
