Orginally built in 1823 by The riverboat captain Charles Rayburn, the place was named Riverview until its acquisition by the writer Allen Tate & his wife, novelist Caroline Gordon in 1930. The property is on the National Historic Register since 1979. The existing structure dates to 1831 consisting of a single-story brick cottage with basement laid amidst a 4/5-acre property.
