World famous, picturesque canyon located in Northern Arizona. The canyon was formed by the Colorado River over the last 6 million years. It is 277 miles long and varies in width from 4 to 18 miles and up to a mile in depth.
Historically the area was inhabited by Native Americans. While the first European known to have viewed the canyon was Spaniard García López de Cárdenas in 1540, the canyon was largely unknown until after the U.S. Civil War when Major John Wesley Powell, a one-armed Civil War veteran made the first recorded journey through the canyon on the Colorado River in 1869.
On January 11, 1908 President Theodore Roosevelt designated the Grand Canyon a national monument and on February 26, 1919 Grand Canyon National Park was established. One of the United States' oldest national parks it covers 1,902 square miles.
