This site is a platform from where in ancient time the Tzars' decrees were usually announced. It was also the background for the execution of the streltsi in Surikov's painting "The Morning of the Execution of the Streltsi," showing Peter the Great presiding, that hangs in he State Tretyakov Gallery (museum) in Moscow.
