mansion / manor house / villa, NRHP - National Register of Historic Places, Greek Revival (architecture), 1850s construction
The home of the family of former Texas Governor Elisha M. Pease from 1857-1957. The mansion was sold to Governor Allan Shivers in 1957 who later donated the property to the University of Texas in 1975. Governor Shivers lived in the property until his death in 1996, upon which the University put the property up for sale, in accord with Governor Shiver's wish that the proceeds be used to fund endowed chairs at the University of Texas Law School. The State of Texas purchased the property from the University in 1996, however the property was not open to the public and was falling into disrepair, leading to its sale in 2004 to a private party for approximately $3 million. It is rumored that the property required an additional $3 million in renovations, including the installation of central air conditioning.
