The palatial estate was built in 1931 for J. Robert Neal of the Maxwell House Coffee family. Noted architect John Staub designed the home in an 18th century French chateau style. The mansion has just over 20,000 square feet of living space. Harris County Central Appraisal District shows it to have a current market value of $9,650,800 and a current appraised value of $7,855,350. This was the former home of Houston oilman John W. and Mary Elizabeth Mecom, Sr. Mr. Mecom passed away on October 12, 1981. His wife, Mrs. Mecom, continued living in the mansion until her death at the age of 86 on May 4, 1996. Due to an impeding divorce, the residence was put on the market in 2000 for $11.5-million when rival real estate firms Martha Turner Properties and John Daugherty Realtors signed an agreement to co-market the mansion then owned by Texas Land Commissioner David Dewhurst and his wife, Tammy Jo Dewhurst. The estate is currently owned by John & Theresa Havens.
