Pitt Meadows ,British Columbia

Canada / British Columbia / Walnut Grove /

The farms in this city are all on reclaimed land which used to be part of the Pitt Polder, which was a huge marsh, the largest inland salt-marsh in Canada, and second-largest in North America, after the Mississippi River Delta's marshes. The Dutch immigrants built the dykes that hold the water back between the late 1800's and the 1940's. Whenever there is a major flood risk, like in 2007, the dykes get raised by the municipality of Pitt Meadows.
