In the late 1870's, the city of Anaheim had a coal mine here.
The Black Star Coal mine, owned and controlled by residents of Anaheim.
Coal was sold in the town at eight dollars per ton.
The coal, tested by the Southern Pacific Railway Company on a trial from Los Angeles to Yuma, was found to be satisfactory for use of locomotives and stationary engines. Silver ledges, gold, and tin mines were also in the hills to the east. To the north there were deposits of asphaltum, gypsum, and bituminous coal.

Black Star is also known for its quirky inhabitants, urban legends and, other assorted anti-social behavior. Frequented by hikers, mountain bikers, love-birds, wanna-be-gang-bangers, and other assorted freaks in various stages of chemically-induced altered states of mind. Although, it's not as creepy as one might have you believe. ~phiz 08/01/07
