Mogden Sewage Treatment Works, located in Isleworth, West London, is one of the largest sewage treatment plants in the United Kingdom. Constructed between 1931 and 1935 at a cost of £1.7 million, the facility spans 55 hectares and serves approximately 1.9 million people. The plant treats wastewater from several main sewers, with some sewage traveling over 20 miles before reaching the site. Notably, more than half of the energy used by the plant is generated on-site through renewable means as part of the treatment process. Despite its essential role, Mogden has faced criticism for contributing to increased mosquito populations and unpleasant odours in the surrounding area. In 2011, residents successfully sued Thames Water, the plant's operator, for failing to adequately manage odours, resulting in a court ruling that the company had violated human rights. Additionally, in 2020, the facility discharged 3.5 billion litres of untreated sewage into the River Thames, highlighting ongoing environmental concerns.

Comments

  • Houses in surrounding area are with very attractive price tag. But most of the people avoid buying due to sewage works. The smell gets worse during summer time.
