Akshara SkPT013 - Sree Manasa devi Manasarovar Lake is 13th Akshara Sakthi Peeth. Named Manasarovar because Brahmadev's mann(mind) filled the crater where Satidevi's palm fell. Some call it might be the 'right forearm' of the goddess. There is no temple or sculptures here, a sacred rock near the lake is believed to be the body part of Satidevi.
Body Part/Angam - right palm; Anga Devi - Dakshayani: Aksharam - O/Om: Akshara Devi - Omkara Devi/ Ashwanidevi: Bhairav - Amareshwara Bhairav. Peetam - Kailasa Mahashakti Peetam
Locatiion: Maanasarovar could be reached from Kailash Parvath.
According to the Hindu mythology, Lake Mansarovar is a personification of purity, and one who drinks water from the lake will go to the Abode of Lord Shiva after death. He is believed to be cleansed of all his sins committed over even a hundred lifetimes.
Like Mount Kailash, Lake Mansarovar is a place of pilgrimage, attracting religious people from India, Nepal, Tibet and the neighboring countries. Bathing in the Mansarovar and drinking its water is believed to cleanse all sins. Pilgrimage tours are organized regularly, especially from India, the most famous of which is the Kailash Manasa Sarovar Yatra which takes place every year. Pilgrims come to take ceremonial baths in the cleansing waters of the lake.

Manasa Sarovar lake has long been viewed by the pilgrims as the source of four of the greatest rivers of Asia namely Brahmaputra, Karnali, Indus and Sutlej. So it is an axial point which has been thronged by pilgrims for thousands of years. The region was initially closed to pilgrims from outside and no foreigners were allowed between 1949 and 1980. But after the 80s it has again become a part of the Indian pilgrim trail.

According to Hindu religion, the lake was first created in the mind of the Lord Brahma after which it manifested on Earth.Hence, in Sanskrit it is called "Manas sarovar", which is a combination of the words manas (mind) and sarovar (lake). The lake, in Hindu religious belief, is also supposed to be the summer abode of swans. Considered as sacred birds, the swans (Sanskrit: Hansa) are an important element in the symbology of the Subcontinent, representing wisdom and beauty

Buddhists also associate the lake to the legendary lake known as Anavatapta in Sanskrit and Anotatta in Pali, where Queen Maya is believed to have conceived Buddha. The lake has a few monasteries on its shores. The most notable of which is the ancient Chiu Gompa Monastery, which has been built right onto a steep hill. It looks as if it has been carved right out of the rock..Manasasarovar or Tibetan name is Mapham Yutso, lies at 4,556 m above mean sea level. It is the highest fresh-water lake in the world. It lies 2,000 km from Lhasa and is relatively round in shape. The circumference of Manasasarovar is 88 km, depth is 90 m and it occupies a total area of 320 km². The lake freezes in winter and melts in the spring. The Sutlej River, the Yarlung Tsangpo River, the Indus River, and the Karnali River all trace their sources to its close vicinity.
Like Mount Kailash, Lake Manasasarovar is a place of pilgrimage, attracting religious people from India, Tibet and the neighboring countries. Bathing in the Manasasarovar and drinking its water is believed, by Hindus, to cleanse all sins. Pilgrimage tours are organized regularly, especially from India, the most famous of which is the Kailash Manasasarovar Yatra which takes place every year. Pilgrims come to take ceremonial bathes in the cleansing waters of the lake.

According to Hindu belief, the lake was first created in the mind of the Lord Brahma. Hence, in Sanskrit it is called "Manasasarovar" मानस सरोवरः, which is a combination of the words Manas मनस् (mind) and Sarovar सरोवरः(lake). The lake, in Hindu mythology, is also supposed to be the summer abode of swans, who are considered as very wise and sacred birds. It is also believed the Devas descend to bathe in the lake between 3 and 5 am the time of the day known as Brahma Muhurta. It looks as if it has been carved right out of the rock. The Jains and the Bonpos of Tibet equally revere this spot with great enthusiasm.

  • The place should be 'Manas Sarovar' not Manasarovar Lake! Sarovar itself means 'lake ', why repeat ? Please do not change the names as you wish, it becomes very difficult to search the place with its correct name
  • I'm absulutly agree with missionram. It is Manas Sarovar.
  • Though you guys seem to be right, in sanskrit two words can be gelled to form a single word. So Manas + Sarovar becomes Manasarovara. Several well known examples include Maheshwar (Maha Inshwar).
  • I am aware of 'sandhis'....there are some rules to be followed when u join(I'll not describe them as it is out of context)... You simply can not join two words at ur will...Eg 'Dahi Handii' would become 'Dahyandi'...wow...how do people recognize ? Similarly Manas Sarovar does not qualify ...
  • mAnasa मानस = belonging to the mind(from मनस् manas = mind) सरोवरः = a large pond or lake deep enough for a lotus to grow (According to Monier Williams) So मानससरोवरः should be the final conjucted word in Sanskrit. The same in Hindi would then be mAnas-sarOvar (where there should be a pause between the two s sounds)or more precisely Manasasarovar. However, due to the international use and for easy identification, when used in English, "Lake Manasasarovar" should be most appropriate even though the word Lake here may be a repetition (पुनरुक्ति). In any case, thanks to all for the useful note and the following discussion!
  • Viswaprabha thanks for the putting in Sanskrit proof(should I say !)....for what my first comment abt this place. I did not want to give minute details in my 2nd comment. Your comment clears almost all doubts about the proper usage. But I find this line a bit annoying 'However, due to the international use and for EASY identification,'. I do not know why, Indians have mentality to give some leniency to English and pave way for in-accuracy.... Mammoth eg being the name India itself which is derived from river Indus which westerners mis-pronounced 'Sindhu'. Many names have lost their original names unfortunately. Here we have Wikimapia, a Web 2.0 technology where information control is with users; why not use this platform for correct usage ? Also going by your comments, it would be proper to use 'Lake Manas' in English and is EASY as well, not to mention it's correctness
  • Indian by mentality are argumentative, thus the book by Nobel Laureate Amartya sen, "Argumentative Indian". The lake all over the world is known as Lake Mansarovar. Every one do not know Sanskrit sarovar. So where is the ground for argument when your medium of expression is in English. Develop a sanskrit wikimapia and do not write Lake there, but until then follow English nomenclature
  • Ha ha...Indianpitta very good observation, Indians being argumentative. We indeed are happy arguing whereas foreigners get things done about what they think ! My only intention is to set data properly, why not correct things in the world which are wrong ? why simply follow the herd when u know the path is not correct ? Afterall 'English nomenclature ' about Indian names, should have origin from Indian language. wow, your brainchild Sanskrit Wikimapia seems to be great idea...time to implement...what say !! Count me in :)
  • Thanks for detailed discussion. Certainly this is healthy and required rather calling Indians as Aurgumentative. I don't need to agree with Amartya Sen as that is his view point. With regard to Manasa Sarovar (as it is written in Sanskrit), without conjoining the words it is spelt pure and clear. However, within India, many such words are prounounced differently, the major difference being between North India and South India. In North India they always say Ram as gainst in South India they say Rama. If you look at Sanskrit the word Rama (not Ram) seems to be appropriate. The same happened once when they wanted to name name a naval academy in Vishakapatnam in Andhra Pradesh. The chosen name was Satavahana (based Satavahana dynasty), but the admiral incharge wanted to name it as Satavahan (removed 'a' in the name). When it went to President for ascent, (at that time VV Giri was the President), he asked the reason why the name Satavahan and when explained to him about the dynasty rule in erstwhile Andhra Pradesh region, he asked them to change to Satavahana. I think the names getting shortered in North India is due to Persian invasion where the names have changed as we further know that when British were in India they changed many names to suit their prounounciation.
  • it is mansarover, not kailash mansarover, kailash parwat is beside it.
  • Please lets not quarrel over who is right & who is wrong & what is right or wrong & loose sight of the very object itself, for God is one with so many names, we very lovingly read Sahastranaam (you can catch me on the spelling & I will very humbly accept your version) People of different religions perceive that one God in different shapes & names. What one has to understand is the objective. I am no scholar so I did not have problems searching Mansarovar/ Manas Sarovar, etc, I was only interested in seeing the beautiful pictures of this divine lake (which was very kindly uploaded by a gentle soul) & its position. Am very sorry if my comments provoke any adverse thoughts in the minds of the reader. Hope to go there someday. Regards to all my brothers & sisters.
  • Middle finger to all the bourgeois 'bhakts' across all the religions coming from all over the world with their excess money to pollute a place just because it is so pristine and beautiful. The fragile Tibetan plateau will be ruined within no time now since swarms of locusts' have started approaching it from all sides in their quest to meet god. All the shit and fart from their overworked digestive systems will melt the snow of 'The land of snow'. Show some respect 'O you holy assholes to what you can see and feel; rather than what you can't see or feel, that which does not exist. Especially to the people from subcontinent: don't make it the next haridwar, sangam, or banaras famous for their filth, generating foreign curiosity that: how can a people shit and eat at the same place and not die 'en masse'. Please don't make this place the next hotspot for cholera and typhoid. Use your money somewhere else O pious(filthy) children of god.
  • Manasarover lake is also most holy lake in rang community residing border lands of India & Nepal with western tibet. Residents of Vyass, Darama and Chaudans worship the holy name of Manasarover with most Kailashpati. The manasarover is called as Chhu Mapang (छू मापांग) in rang community. The supreme deity Kailashpati is called as Hya Gangri (ह्या गंगरी). Many sacred tourists like swami pranavananda has also indicated Gangri ranges in his book. The rang community believes to do parikrama across both Chhu Mapang and Hya Gangri as most sacred object of their life. Rang community also perform parikrama in clockwise direction. The parikrama of Hya Gangri is called as Gangkurr (गं कुर्र) and Parikrama of Chhu Mapang is called as Chhu kurr (छु कुर्र). Most important thing is that these community left unnamed the lake near the Chau Mapang to avoid the negative energies. It is believed that almost all the deities of rang community are residing in Kailash Region (rang name Gui Ba Chagg Ree -nine swastik symbols). The names of Hya Gangri and Chau Mapang are chanted together. Gangri na thailo Chau mapang na binlo means Everything should be as high and sacred as Kailash Pati and As complete, eternal, full and wide as Mansaover. As long as there is snow in the holy mountain of gangri (kailash) and water in holy lake of chhu mapang (mansarover) the human and other lives of universe would be continued. Jai Hya Gangri Jai Chau Mapang. more in future. thanks
