Bareilly

India / Uttar Pradesh / Bareli /
 city, taluka headquarter, district headquarter

Bareilly is a city in Bareilly district in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. Standing on the Ramganga river, it is the capital of Rohilkhand Division and is a center for the manufacture of furniture and for trade in cotton, grain, and sugar. The city's population in 2001 was 699,839. Geographically it forms the outer gateway to enter Uttarakhand State. Bareilly is the 4th city of Uttar Pradesh which has CNG fuel stations, after Lucknow, Kanpur and Agra.

This fast-growing city is also known as Bans-Bareilly, named after the name of two son of king of bareilly, one is Bansal Dev & Second is Baral Dev.Though Bareilly is also a production center for cane(Bans) furniture, but it is just a coincidence. The name Bans Bareilly is not derived from its big bans (bamboo) market.
It is also famous for Ala Hazrat Imam Ahmed Raza Khan Fazil-e-Barelvi's Dargah all over the world and is also called "Bareilly Shareef" by Muslims.
The status of the city has been upgraded when its name was included in the Counter Magnets of NCR, because it is equidistant from New Delhi and Lucknow and has a lot of potential for setting up industries to attract people to settle. Historically it was the part of the ancient kingdom of Panchal. In the Medieval period it was under the Rohillas. The modern city's foundation was laid by Mukrand Rai in 1657.

  • The district of Bareilly (also known as Bareli or Bans Bareli) in Uttar Pradesh was once part of ancient Panchala. Panchala acquired great significance during the later Vedic period and it was the center of later Vedic civilization. The scholars of Panchala were famous throughout India. The ruins of Ahichhatra, the capital of ancient Panchala, have been unearthed near Ramnagar Village of Anola Tehsil, thus adding to its significance. Coins belonging to pre-Guptan periods have also been obtained from Ahichhatra. Some of the masterpieces of Indian terracotta art are from Ahichhatra. The district has an area of 4,120 sq km. The population is almost 3.5 million. The temperature varies from a maximum of 44ºC in the months of May-June to 4ºC during the cool months of December-January. Ramganga is the main river. The other rivers include the Siddha, the Dojora, the Bahgul (west), the Sankha, the Deoranian and the Nakatia, and their tributaries. Bareilly has also been the center of many economic, cultural and educational activities. Camphor and Allied Products, one of the largest camphor making units of the world and a urea making plant are situated here. Bareilly District is also a leading manufacturer of handicrafts items such as Zari work, bamboo and wooden furniture, surma and patang manjha

  • MY CITY IS VERY NICE
  • Dear I am really surprise to see the name of founder of Bareilly city 1657. I think Makrand was not the foundr. Bareilly was founded by the two son of Raja Jagat Sing in 1535-36 which place near University or old Barielly Jagatpura. After Jagat Sing his two son Baral Dev and Vasudev develop his kingdom in the western side as a Suraksha Chouki which is known as Samshan Bhumi todya. after Makrand Rai and Mughal governers establish new city like Shadana, Alamgirpur,Quila, etc. that is called today bareilly.
