town, UNESCO World Heritage Site
The old section of Stralsund was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1992. The city was an important trade center of the Hanseatic League in the 14th and 15th centuries, and was a major administrative and defensive center for the German territories in the Swedish kingdom during the 17th and 18th centuries. The town hall, churches and houses influenced development of the Brick Gothic architectural style in the southern Baltic region.
