Georgia Power's Plant Bowen coal-fired electric generating facility produced 22,631,283 megawatthours during 2006, third highest in the United States. Only the Palo Verde nuclear generating station in Arizona and Georgia Power's Scherer coal-fired generating station in Georgia produced more power.

  • Probably the second largest (in output) coal-fired power plant in the country. 3.2 million kilowatts.This plant was rated as the worst emitter of toxic chemicals (19.5 million pounds) in the country in 1998. It is owned by the Georgia Power Company, which itself is owned by one the largest electrical utilities in the country, the Southern Company, based in Atlanta. About 500 of the approximately 3,000 power plants in the United States use coal.
  • This plant burns seven train loads of coal per day. A pair of scrubbers were built in 2005-2008 which reduce sulfur dioxide emissions by 95%.
