Religious building constructed in the seventeenth century by Jesuit architects Martellange Etienne and Francois Derand on the orders of Louis XIII. Located rue Saint-Antoine, the church is alongside the Lycee (school) Charlemagne, also founded by the Jesuits.
The first stone of the present church was laid by King Louis XIII in 1627.
Between 1688 and 1698, Marc-Antoine Charpentier was employed by the Jesuits, and was master of music in this church.
On September 2, 1792, five priests were killed during services in the church during the revolutionary massacres of September. The Cult of Reason was set up by the state in the church at that time.
Catholic worship was restored in 1802, the year of the Concordat.
