Le Marais (meaning "the marsh" in French) is a district in Paris, France, traditionally a bourgeois area, but also well-known historically. It spreads across parts of the 3rd and 4th arrondissements in Paris (on the Rive Droite, or Right Bank, of the Seine).

Comments

  • Quartier très sympa de Paris
  • In the 70's to 90's, this was the gayest part of town, similar to Chelsea in NYC or Castro Street in San Francisco in reputation. It is a place of small, irregular shaped streets, boutiques, galeries and museums. It includes the majestic Place Vendôme (with Victor Hugo's house) and the Jewish quarter (mainly around the rue des Rosiers). It has, as usual, become gentrified and is not necessarily "gay central" anymore.
  • The Ile Saint-Louis is not part of the Marais.
