The cathedral of Our Lady in Sées was originally build by the town's first bishop c. 440. It was destroyed in the 9th or 10th century, then rebuilt using some of the ruined fortifications of the town in c. 986. Damaged by fire in the 11th century, the cathedral was rebuilt in the 12th, but was once again damaged by fire during the wars between Henry II of England and Louis VII of France, in 1174. The present structure is a Gothic edifice from the 13th-14th centuries. Damaged and repaired during the Hundred Years War, the cathedral underwent substantial repairs again, particularly during the 18th and 19th centuries.
