  • Baniyachong is my birth place and it is the largest village of the world with a peopulation of more than 83000 (cencus 2001). Once upon a time there was a bird hunter named Baniya. He built a CHUNG (lacal word for temporary roof like shelter made of bamboo ) for the purpose of hunting. The name of Baniyachong was derived from 'Baniya' and 'chung'. Baniyachong was part of Kamrup in the acient times and part of Laur in the pre-middle-middle age. It was ruled by Hindu Lords of Laur in the past. Later on it was annexed to Bengal by Subedar Islam Khan by defeating Local Lord Anwar Kha. Baniyachong is the birth place of many renoun persons, namely Padmanath Bhattachariya a prominent educatinist, Shirajul Hossain Khan a prominent journalist and political activist, Ramnath Biswas who travelled world with by-cycle, Hem Sen a prominent revulatinoist, Prof. Dr.Abdul Quddus Dhaka University, Abed Hasan who formed BRAC and many others. elaheebd@gamil.com
