Location of the WWII airstrip targeted by the Japanese during the Battle of Midway.

During the battle, every square inch of the island was covered with virtually every aircraft in the U.S. military arsenal, from antique Brewster Buffalos to B-17s. The antiquated Marine fighters and vindicators suffered heavy losses during the battle.

The island is now part of the Midway Wildlife Refuge and is being "reclaimed" by nature.

  • The Brewster Buffalo was hardly an 'antique', being produced from 1938 to 1941. But it was mediocre.
