Westfield West Covina, formerly The Plaza at West Covina, and before that the West Covina Fashion Plaza, is a shopping mall in West Covina, California, owned by The Westfield Group. Its anchor stores are JCPenney, Macy's (Formerly Robinsons-May), and Sears. Robinsons-May was renamed Macy's on September 9, 2006. Federated Department Stores, parent of both Macy's and Robinsons-May, has already agreed to sell the former Macy's store building to Westfield. The location was liquidated and closed in March of 2008. Demolition of the 144,527-square-foot building on the north side of the mall began the beginning of October 2008. Westfiled officials plan to open a smaller retailer store and five restaurants as part of a new outdoor "town center"-type development at the site.
The West Covina Fashion Plaza, as it was originally called, opened in the mid 70's to great fanfare. It was a downtown redevelopment project that basically tore down an existing center keeping Desmonds and The Broadway. The new center paralleled the San Bernardino Freeway and anchors JCPenney and Bullock's filled as new anchors (Desmonds was not connected to the mall next to the Broadway store). Desmonds folded in the 80's and the two level store became a Tower Records location. In 1992, an expansion was started that added a new Robinsons-May wing to the east end of the mall from the Bullock's store. The first major anchor changes didn't come until 1996, when Federated Department Stores sold the Broadway store to Sears, and converted the Bullock's location to Macy's. Sears opened their new location in 1997, moving from a stand alone location in Covina. On September 9, 2006, Macys christened the old Robinsons-May store as Macys and plans are to convert the existing Macys (former Bullock's) to a Home and Mens store.
