With 1.15 million people, Hiroshima is the capital of Hiroshima Prefecture, and began life as a castle town and grew into an industrial center. This was one of only two cities to have been ruined by nuclear attack (the other one was Nagasaki, and the bombs were both dropped by the United States Air Force.) It was completely destroyed by the first atomic bomb ever used in warfare (the second atomic bomb ever exploded). The city
has made a resilient recovery. It has always been a major port, but it is also an automotive center, being one of the headquarters for Mazda. Hiroshima looks to the future as a main contributor to Japan's economy and culture, and the world's peace.
