This was intended to be the grand drive from Chelsea Hospital to Kensington Palace. They only built this bit. The project was one of several abandoned on the death of King Charles II in 1685. English monarchs never had the funds for grand statements of this type - a fact which may have contributed to the survival of the monarchy. Houses were built along the street in the early 19th century.
