Erasmus Hall High School was founded in 1786 by Dutch settlers and has noteworthy architecture in several styles. The school was the first secondary school chartered by the New York Regents. It was named for the Dutch scholar Desiderius Erasmus, called “the greatest Latinist since Cicero.” The building was designed c. 1905 in the Collegiate High School by C.B.J. Snyder. Later alterations were made by Wm. H. Gompert and Eric Kebbon. The original Erasmus Hall remained in the quad of the new school. Windows were fabricated by the Church Glass Co. and Tiffany Studios.

Erasmus has a long and colorful history and boasts a remarkable number of famous and accomplished alumni. After years of poor academic scores, the school was divided internally into several smaller high schools, each concentrating on a different academic area. The schools have separate administrations and faculties, and hold classes in different sections of the large building. However, they use the common lunchroom, gymnasia, library and auditorium at separate times during the day.
